MORE ABOUT MARIKANA

The Marikana project is a response to high population growth (largely a result of mining

operations) and the urgent need for affordable housing. Over the last 15 years less than 600

formal new houses were built in Marikana.

ALSA, the Rustenburg Local Municipality, and major mining companies developed a

spatial development framework that anticipates future mine-related growth as well as

allowing Marikana to maximize its locational advantages adjacent to Rustenburg.

in their community. The SDF provides the framework for the upgrading of the existing

Marikana CBD, the creation of a light industrial area, and the development of

approximately houses & related social amenities within the next 10-15years.

Preparation for the development of Marikana Phase 1 has commenced. The problems

with available bulk services are solved.

ALSA Develops North West Pty Ltd is the ALSA franchisee company that will develop

and deliver the first phase in Marikana. The Spatial Development project consists of approx. 425 ha to be developed intosectional title units for the Social and affordable housing Market in various phases.

South Africa’s Housing Crisis

Despite the South African government’s efforts to deliver 300,000 houses over the past five years, the country still faces a significant housing backlog, with over 2.4 million households registered on the National Housing Needs Register in 2023. - Centre for Affordable Housing Finance in Africa 2023 Yearbook

South Africa’s severe housing crisis can be partly attributed to rapid urbanization. In 2022, more than 65% of the country’s population resided in urban areas. The population of Johannesburg, South Africa’s most densely populated city, has surged by nearly 30% since 2011. Amid a shortfall of 3.7 million housing units, low-income households – which constitute the majority of the populace – struggle to find decent, safe shelter in the country’s urban centers.- Koketso Moeti, Project Syndicate, Oct 2023
